Israel continues to weaponise humanitarian aid to Gaza: MSF

ISRAELI OCCUPIED AND STARVED GAZA, 27 Oct. - (ANA) - Israel is deliberately restricting aid to Gaza as part of its military campaign, an official from Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said on Sunday, accusing the government of turning humanitarian assistance into a weapon of war.

MSF project coordinator in Gaza, Caroline Willemen, warned that aid delivered to the Gaza Strip "should not be tied to any political conditions" and expressed concern over the limited amount of humanitarian relief entering the devastated enclave since the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was implemented.

Willemen explained that although Israeli attacks on Gaza have decreased considerably since the ceasefire came into effect, the Israeli army has continued large-scale offensives since 19 October, with near-daily strikes.

The MSF representative cautioned that the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire, with ongoing shortages of water and shelter.

She stressed that there is an urgent need for humanitarian assistance, noting that rebuilding Gaza will take significant time.

However, "the minimum basic humanitarian conditions in the Strip have not yet been reached".

Willemen added that MSF teams continue to document cases of severe malnutrition among children under five and pregnant women, warning that the situation remains alarming despite minor improvements. Providing daily health services also remains extremely difficult, despite the ceasefire.

The statement coincides with new data from the United Nations, compiled under the "2720 Mechanism for Gaza", which has tracked aid deliveries since 19 May, following Israel’s two-month blockade.

The data shows that fewer than 100 aid trucks operated by the UN and partner agencies have entered Gaza each day since the recent ceasefire - a fraction of the 600 daily trucks pledged under a plan brokered by US President Donald Trump.

Between 10 and 21 October, Israel authorised an average of 1,011 tonnes of aid per day - roughly 94 trucks - an increase from the 700 tonnes (62 trucks) recorded daily between 19 May and 9 October.

However, this remains well below the volume of deliveries the UN had anticipated following the ceasefire.

Earlier this month, UN Humanitarian Chief Tom Fletcher remarked that aid reaching Gaza was "a fraction of what’s needed," adding that there were "tens of trucks on a good day rather than the hundreds of trucks required."

Meanwhile, organisations such as Oxfam have reiterated that food supplies entering Gaza are still failing to meet the population’s nutritional needs, with some regions continuing to face famine conditions.

Many international NGOs remain restricted from delivering aid, while commercial imports fall short of meeting the nutritional requirements of Gaza’s population.    - (ANA) -
