 Morocco win U20 World Cup

SANTIAGO, CHILE, 20 Oct. - (ANA) -

Morocco’s Under-20 team won the World Youth Championship on Sunday night, defeating Argentina 2-0 in Chile.

Yassir Zabiri dazzled as Morocco stunned Argentina in the FIFA U-20 World Cup Chile 2025™ final. It made Mohamed Ouahbi’s team only the second Africans to conquer the competition after Ghana, whom Andre Ayew helped to glory in 2009.

The victory had a Dutch touch with Ismael Baouf (SC Cambuur) and Ilias Boumassaoudi (FC Den Bosch) taking part.

The Belgian-born Baouf started in the heart of Morocco’s backline, while striker Boumassaoudi came on 15 minutes before the end. It was the fifth substitute appearance for the player who scored three times in five matches for Den Bosch in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie this season. Baouf didn’t miss a single match at the World Youth Championship. He also made five appearances for Cambuur this season.

Yassir Zabiri of Portugal’s FC Famalicão was the match-winner, scoring twice. This brought his total to five goals, the same as Benja Cremaschi of the United States, Lucas Michal of France, and Neiser Villarreal of Colombia. Cremaschi also provided two assists, earning him the Golden Boot as top scorer.

Zabiri opened the match in the 12th minute with a beautiful free-kick before scoring again 15 minutes later with a close-range finish after an Othmane Maamma cross. Incidentally, Watford’s Maamma had already been named Player of the Tournament before the final.

This is the first time Morocco’s Under-20 team have won a World Cup. Their victory is even more impressive, given that Argentina hold the record for champions in this category, having previously won six titles. Morocco are the second African country to achieve this success, after Ghana in 2009.

Argentina were the overwhelming favourites. They had won a record six titles and only lost one decider, while Morocco were appearing in the fixture for the first time. Moreover, the Albiceleste had won all six of their outings, scoring 15 goals and conceding only two, while the Atlas Cubs had lost to Mexico and only got past France on penalties.

The script nevertheless began unravelling early at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martinez Pradanos in Santiago. Zabiri went racing through on goal, dinked the ball over Santino Barbi and was clattered down by the Argentina goalkeeper. Morocco wanted a red card and a penalty, but following a VAR review, a yellow and a free-kick were given. The Atlas Cubs’ disappointment was short-lived, however, with Zabiri majestically curling the set-piece into the top corner.

Diego Placente’s side immediately went on the attack, but Ouahbi’s charges struck them on the counter to double the advantage. Ismael Baouf recovered possession admirably and fed Othmane Maamma, whose cross was volleyed home emphatically by Zabiri.

On the stroke of half-time, both teams had a big chance. First, Mateo Silvetti charged down the right, outmuscled his marker and pulled his shot inches wide. Then Maamma cut inside and fired the ball past Barbi, only for Juan Villalba to desperately hook it clear.

Morocco went close moments after the restart, Zabiri conning his man and arrowing the ball just wide from outside the box. Argentina responded when sliding substitute Ian Subiabre shot over following slick wing play from Gianluca Prestianni.

Thereafter, although Argentina monopolised possession and won a series of corners, infallible defending from Baouf, Fouad Zahouani and Co meant they barely troubled goalkeeper Ibrahim Gomis.

The final whistle sparked wild celebrations from the Moroccan players. Forty-eight years after the Atlas Cubs participated in the inaugural FIFA U-20 World Cup, they had got their hands on the trophy.   - (ANA) -
