South African parties unite against ANC

Pretoria, 16 Aug-(ANA)-South Africa's main opposition party has agreed to merge with a smaller party in a move to weaken the ruling African National Congress (ANC).

South Africa's Democratic Alliance will merge with the Independent Democrats by the next national election in 2014, reports say.

The ANC, led by President Jacob Zuma, won a two-thirds majority at last year's election.

Agency reports say that the Congress of the People, which split from the ANC in the lead-up to last year's election, may also join the merger.

The Democratic Alliance is currently led by provincial premier Helen Zille, a white woman who admits that the new political force will need black leadership if it is to become a credible alternative government. (ANA)
