Rwanda urged to indict war crime suspects

New York, 17 Aug-(ANA)-The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda may lose its credibility unless it indicts and tries Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) officers suspected of having committed war crimes.

Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch, said "The prosecutor's failure to commit to prosecuting senior RPF officers has undermined his credibility and that of the ICTR," adding that "Time is running out for him to fulfill his mandate and to secure the tribunal's legacy as a champion of justice and accountability for all victims in Rwanda."

In a swift reaction, chief prosecutor Hassan Jallow said that he has done everything he can to investigate crimes on all sides for the events of 1994.

The RPF is alleged to have killed between 25,000 and 45,000 civilians in the same three-month period. (ANA)
