Gambia should drop charges against journalists, IPI

Dakar, 24 July-(ANA)-A Paris-based media group has called on the Gambian authorities to drop charges immediately against seven journalists charged with sedition.

The International Press Institute (IPI) called for international condemnation of Gambia's treatment of the press and said failure to protect media freedom would results in other human rights being violated in the West African country.

"The Gambian authorities must immediately drop all charges against the seven journalists, and implement all previous rulings of the ECOWAS community court," IPI Director David Dadge said in a statement.

The seven journalists were held last month after the Gambia Press Union released a statement critical of the government's treatment of journalists, particularly since the killing of a veteran reporter, Deyda Hydara, in 2004.

All seven were subsequently released on bail.(ANA)
