African Union extends Darfur mission

Addis Ababa, 22 July-(ANA)-The African Union's peace and security council on has extended the mandate of its hybrid peacekeeping force in Darfur with the United Nations by one year, a spokesman said.

The council "has renewed, without change, the UNAMID (UN-African Union Mission in Darfur) mandate for 12 months, beginning July 31, and asked that the UN do the same," said AU spokesman El Ghassim Wane.

According to the spokesman, the council noted that the "security situation has been generally calm in recent months" in the Sudanese region.

A new commander for the force has also been named, with Rwandan Lieutenant General Patrick Nyamwumba replacing Nigerian General Martin Agwei, he said.

The force has faced problems in getting the number of peacekeepers and amount of equipment it needs to ensure security in the conflict-riven region.(ANA)
