New York, 10 June-(ANA)-The UN Security Council has strongly condemned the wave of political assassinations in restive Guinea-Bissau and urged the government to bring those responsible to justice.
The 15-member council also unanimously backed a statement appealing to the international community to work closely the Guinea-Bissau government and regional organizations to back probes into the pattern of killings of high-profile people in the West African nation.
Members "condemned in the strongest terms" the June 5 killings of presidential candidate Baciro Dabo, former defense minister Helder Proenca and two of his bodyguards.
They stressed the importance of national reconciliation and the fight against impunity in Guinea-Bissau as well as of ensuring that "the necessary conditions are put in place for the holding of free, fair and transparent presidential elections, which is a key to peace and stability in the country."
