Gunmen shoot dead MP in Somalia

Mogadishu, 16 April-(ANA)-A Somali MP has been shot dead by unknown gunmen in the capital, Mogadishu, officials say.

Abdulahi Isse Abtidoon is the first MP to be killed in the capital since a new government was sworn in after UN-brokered peace talks in January.

Somalia has not had a functioning national government since 1991.

Two MPs were injured in an attempted assassination earlier this month.

On Monday, Islamist insurgents fired mortars towards the plane of visiting US Congressman Donald Payne, as it was about to take off in Mogadishu.

He was the most senior US politician to visit Mogadishu for more than a decade.

Radical Islamist guerrillas, who have sworn to topple the fragile transitional federal government, control parts of Mogadishu and much of central and southern Somalia.(ANA)
