GUINEA/DRUGS TRAFFICKINGBack
[Published: Wednesday February 25 2009]

Ex-Guinea leader's son arrested

Conakry, 25 Feb-(ANA)-The eldest son of the former President of Guinea, Lansana Conte, has been arrested for alleged drugs trafficking.

Ousmane Conte was detained by the military authorities that seized power after his father's death last December.

Allegations implicating the Conte family in drugs trafficking have spread since Lansana Conte's death.

Guinea, like other West African states, is known to be a transit point for smuggling cocaine from Colombia to markets in Europe.

On Monday a relative of the former president was shown on state television confessing that he had received tens of thousands of dollars from a Colombian partner.

The army officers who seized power when President Conte died, after more than 20 years in power, said they intended to punish the corruption associated with the illegal drugs trade. (ANA)
