Concern as Covid-19 cases surge in the US and China

WASHINGTON/BEIJING, 29 June. - (ANA) - The spread of the new coronavirus has taken a “swift and very dangerous turn” in the US  and China over the last couple of weeks.

The daily number of cases has gone from an average of about 2,000, to more than 5,000, he said.

A number of US states are racing to reimpose lockdowns amid a new leap of coronavirus infections that have taken the total to more than 2.5 million – apparently triggered by the push to reopen the economy.

The number of cases in the US hit at least 2,534,981, part of a global total of more than 10 million.

Meanwhile, China has reinstated a lockdown near Beijing, affecting around 400,000 people, after a surge in cases there.

Coronavirus-related fatalities continue to pile up as the world passes half a million deaths.

More than 4,700 people are dying every 24 hours from COVID-19-linked illness, according to Reuters calculations based on an average from June 1 to 27.   - (ANA)
