MAPUTO 28 Oct (ANA) - Mozambique's current president, Filipe Nyusi, has been re-elected for a second term after his ruling party Frelimo won the general elections, the National Election Commission (CNE) said Sunday.

 

The announcement was made by the CNE's president Abdul Carimo at a ceremony attended by members of competing parties, and national and foreign election observers.

 

The CNE announced that Frelimo and its presidential candidate, Nyusi, are ahead with 73 percent of the vote, and the party is ahead in all 10 Mozambican provinces and will have governors in all provinces.

 

The candidate of the main opposition party Renamo, Ossufo Momade, was the second most voted with 21.88 percent of votes, and the third largest party MDM's candidate Daviz Simango garnered 4.38 percent of the votes.

 

With regard to the election of deputies of the Assembly of the Republic, Frelimo obtained 184 seats, against 60 for Renamo and only six for MDM.

 

In the last legislature, Frelimo had 144 deputies, Renamo 89 and MDM 17.

 

For the elections, there were about 40 parties and coalitions of political parties running to have seats in parliament or compete for provincial governors.

 

The CNE said the elections were peaceful and successful, amid disputes arising from Renamo and MDM claiming that there were fraud and violence throughout the election process.

 

Assembly chairperson Veronica Macamo told the press that the results reflected people's confidence in the Frelimo party.(ANA)
