President Kiir visits Egypt for bilateral talks

By JOSEPH ODUHA

JUBA, 17 Jan. - (ANA) - South Sudanese President Salva Kiir has Wednesday travelled to Cairo for bilateral talks.

Mr Kiir will hold talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi on areas of co-operation, his spokesman, Ateny Wek Ateny, said without giving details.

“He is going for bilateral talks and on the invitation of Egyptian President Al- Sisi,” Mr Ateny told The EastAfrican in Juba.

Cairo and Juba have enjoyed good relations with Egypt investing in education, health and energy sectors in South Sudan.

Egypt currently hosts more than 50,000 South Sudan refugees.

Egypt also supports peace efforts in South Sudan.

Civil strife broke out in December 2013, two years after the South seceded from Sudan.

A peace deal signed in August 2015 led to the formation of a transitional unity government, but was thwarted after fresh fighting broke out in July 2016 in Juba.

The latest peace agreement was signed in on September 12, 2018.  - (ANA) -
