UAE world's largest donor of development aid, says OECD

PARIS, 26 Dec. - (ANA) - The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been ranked at the world’s largest donor of developmental aid relative to its national income, according to data published by the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD).

According to OECD statistics, in 2016 UAE aid reached AED 15.57billion ($4.24 billion), which represents 1.21 percent of the country’s gross national income (GNI). The statistics also show that more than half – 58 percent – of aid provided by the UAE was given in the form of grants.

Coming in second place behind the UAE was Norway, which contributed 1.12 percent of its GNI, Luxembourg, which contributed 1 percent and Sweden, which contributed 0.94 percent.

Sultan Mohammed Al Shamsi, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation for International Development Affairs, said that the UAE’s place in the ranking was the result of policies implemented by His Highness President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, as well as His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.  - (ANA) -
