LONDON, 03 March. - (ANA) - Throughout East Africa, from Somalia and Ethiopia to Kenya and Tanzania, the specter of drought is threatening millions of people.
It is extending into Kenya and Tanzania, and people around the Serengeti ecosystem have been badly hit. Some communities are receiving water rations. Elephants have raided crops in villages outside the park. Maasai have been entering the Serengeti at night with their cattle. Park rangers just impounded 600 Maasai cattle and fined the owners 30 million shillings (over $13,000). The Maasai said they would rather risk their cattle to predators in the park than death by drought.
And of course this is having an impact on wildlife in the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem as well. The Mara River, lifeblood of the Serengeti, is drying out. -(ANA) -
