Protesters clash with French police over Calais
Paris 2 Oct - (ANA) - Migrants carrying a union flag clashed with French riot police as they tried to clear the ‘Jungle’ camp yesterday. The camp in Calais is used by asylum seekers trying to reach Britain, with many trying to cross to the UK on lorries, ferries or the Channel Tunnel every night. French president Francois Hollande has promised to ‘dismantle’ it and move people living there to so-called ‘welcome and orientation centres’ dispersed around the country. But efforts by the authorities were resisted by people living there, as well as left-wing protesters who stood with them in solidarity. Ten riot police were injured, officers disclosed today. (ANA)
