Kinshasa 19 Sep (ANA) - Protesters have set up barricades and burnt vehicles in the Democratic Republic of Congo's capital, Kinshasa, after police blocked them from marching to demand that President Joseph Kabila steps down at the end of his term on 20 December, reports the BBC French service's Poly Muzalia from the city. Reuters news agency quotes witnesses as saying police fired shots to disperse the protesters. The opposition fears that Mr Kabila plans to delay presidential elections due in November in order to cling to power. They argue that the constitution requires him to step down at the end of his two terms as elected president.  Election officials and the government say the poll may have to be delayed because of difficulties in organising them in the vast central African state. 

DR Congo has never had a smooth transfer of power since independence more than 45 years ago.(ANA)
