Iran collects $33.6bn from nuclear deal, US expert
Washington 11 Sep (ANA) - A conservative foreign policy hawk warned Congress on Thursday that Iran may have scooped up as much as $33.6 billion as a result of inking a controversial nuclear weapons pact with the Obama administration. That number is at the extreme high end of what may have flowed into Tehran, said Mark Dubowitz of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies. It includes $20 billion in foreign assets that Iran's central bank reportedly brought back inside the country after the White House approved the unfreezing of those assets. Also part of that number is $11.9 billion – the current value of Iranian assets that were frozen by the United States at the time of the Iranian hostage crisis 35 years ago. Rounding out the total is $1.7 billion in cash that the Obama administration has confirmed it sent to Tehran on cargo planes in the form of foreign banknotes stacked on shipping pallets.(ANA)
