Germany beefs up border control against migrants
Berlin 22 Aug (ANA) - Germany has beefed up its border security with Switzerland to stem the illegal flow of immigrants streaming into the country, it has been revealed. Swiss Finance Minister Ueli Maurer said the tighter security measures show that Berlin has withdrawn its welcome mat for migrants. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been under increasing pressure to get tough on migrants after more than one million refugees poured into the country last year as they fled war and poverty in the Middle East and Africa. The mood towards them has soured further after a spate of attacks on civilians last month, including three carried out by migrants. Mr Maurer also revealed Switzerland itself is turning away more than 1,000 migrants a day who are attempting to cross its borders from Italy in a bid to reach Germany. He said German authorities had assigned an additional 90 border guards and 40 police officers to turn back illegal migrants from Switzerland. Mr Maurer, who as finance minister oversees border guards, said: “Germany is consistently securing the border to Switzerland.(ANA)
