Protests in Pretoria over Afrikaans at university
PRETORIA, 22 Feb - (ANA) - Students at South Africa's University of Pretoria are protesting against the use of the Afrikaans language as a medium of instruction. They are boycotting lectures and many of them are reported to have gathered outside lecture halls. Demonstrators are believed to have interrupted classes and those who were in class are now standing outside. It comes 40 years after the Soweto student uprising of 1976 when thousands took to the streets in South Africa’s largest black township and protested against the use of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction.
