Mauritania's ex-president Salek dies              

Nouakchott, 20 Dec - (ANA) -  Mauritania's ex-president Moustapha Ould Mohamed Salek died yesterday in Paris aged 76,  the presidency in the capital Nouakchott has announced. Ould Mohamed Salek came to power in July 1978 in a coup d'etat against Mauritania's first president Mocatr Ould Daddah. He was ousted by his colleagues and replaced by Mohamed Mahmoud Ould Ahmed Louli. The ex-Mauritanian president was admitted into the intensive care unit two weeks ago as his health deteriorated. On 12 December, incumbent President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz  visited Ould Mohamed Salek in hospital and reportedly instructed that Mauritanian authorities to take charge of the ex-president's medication. Mauritania has declared a three-day national mourning in honour of the deceased. (ANA)
