Elon Musk says 'flying cars are real' as Tesla unveils new Roadster sports EV
NEW YORK, 16 Oct. - (ANA) - Tesla has launched a new sports car with Elon Musk claiming 'flying cars are real'. The next-generation Roadster was shown off at a Texas test facility belonging to SpaceX, Musk's other public company.
Tesla has revealed a new sports car with Elon Musk boldly declaring that 'flying cars are real'. The next-generation Roadster was unveiled at a Texas testing facility owned by SpaceX, Musk's separate publicly listed company.
He offered customers a long-awaited glimpse of the electric vehicle manufacturer's latest flagship model, showcasing its remarkable 'ability to fly' as it soared over other parked Tesla vehicles.
The spectacular display saw the Roadster ascend a vast curved ramp before launching into the air, performing a flip, and touching down safely on the ground.
"Well, it worked," Tesla CEO Elon Musk declared following its successful landing. Lars Moravy, Tesla's Vice President of vehicle engineering, added: "Flying cars are real."
Posting the footage on X, accompanied by the iconic track "In the Air Tonight", Musk wrote: "Turns out the future does have flying cars."
The two-seater sports car is also capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in a record-breaking time of under a second.
Notably, there was no driver behind the wheel during the demonstration, which Musk explained was "to make sure we don't kill anyone".
"Success is not guaranteed," he cautioned. "I mean that. It'll probably work, but if it doesn't work, we're at a safe distance."
He confirmed the vehicle is scheduled to enter production in 2028. Beyond its extraordinary 'flying' capability, the car boasts several other cutting-edge features for motorists.
The Tesla website states: "Roadster can perform at levels unlike any other production car. It goes beyond Plaid to unlock an entirely new dimension of driving. It challenges the limits of design, engineering and physics to deliver an expertly crafted extra-terrestrial vehicle.. The company continue: "We already put Roadster in a rocket. Now we put a rocket in Roadster.
"We created a vehicle capable of next-level performance. Additional SpaceX components can transform that road performance into a truly revolutionary experience."
The vehicle is capable of 'flying' as sophisticated cold-gas thrusters utilise fully electric actuators to propel it into the air. This 'rocket' capability has not been approved for use on public roads and is currently available on an invite-only basis.. The Rocket variant of the vehicle is: "Air ready with seating for one. Features a multi-mode suction system paired with cold-gas thrusters positioned around the perimeter of the vehicle that support forward and upward acceleration as well as lateral rotational movement. So yes, it can fly." - (ANA) -
