Iran and Oman move ahead with plan to charge ships in Strait of Hormuz, NYT reports
NEW YORK, 01 July. - (ANA) - Iran and Oman are moving ahead with plans to charge ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz despite US objections, The New York Times reports.
Oman circulated a formal proposal to the US and other western allies outlining a system under which shipping companies would pay voluntary service fees to use the waterway, the newspaper said in a report quoting an Iranian official and four diplomats.
Iran, by contrast, has repeatedly said it wants to monetise the strait, raising concerns it could seek to impose transit charges.
The plan would mark a major departure from the prewar arrangement, when vessels transited the strait free of charge. - (ANA) -
