WASHINGTON, 22 July. - (ANA) - Dozens of US troops were injured in Iranian attacks in Jordan last week that the Pentagon did not publicly disclose, according to US officials, raising fresh questions about its handling of casualty reporting.

 

US officials told The New York Times that an American military position was struck three times by Iranian missiles or drones, injuring dozens of personnel and damaging several helicopters.

 

The attacks reportedly took place days before another Iranian strike in Jordan that killed two US soldiers and left a third service member missing.

 

The deaths were announced by US officials and later cited by President Donald Trump as the administration stepped up its bombing campaign against Iran. However, the Pentagon has not disclosed where the attack occurred or provided further details about the circumstances.

 

Iran has in recent days claimed responsibility for attacks on several US-linked sites in Jordan, including Muwaffaq Salti Air Base and Aqaba airport.

 

Tehran has also said it targeted a US command centre at the Al-Tanf base in neighbouring Syria, although the US military says it withdrew from the base earlier this year.

 

The latest revelation means three US service members have been confirmed dead since fighting resumed between the United States and Iran.

 

The third death occurred in northern Iraq on Saturday during the controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian attack drone, US Central Command said.

 

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell rejected suggestions that the military had concealed or misrepresented casualty figures during the conflict.

 

At least 17 US service members are believed to have been killed and a further 427 wounded since the war began on 28 February, when Israel, backed by the United States, launched its military campaign against Iran.

 

The Pentagon has released few details about the conflict since the collapse of the ceasefire more than a week ago. It has also declined to say how the fighting has affected US stocks of air defence interceptors or assess publicly the extent to which Iran's missile capabilities have been degraded.

 

On Monday, the US Department of War identified the two soldiers killed in Jordan as 25-year-old Tyler James Feehan of Hawaii and 19-year-old Isabella Gonzales of Texas.   - (ANA) -
