BEIJING/TRIPOLI, 18 May. - (ANA) - In a significant move for Libya’s logistics sector, the Misrata Free Zone (MFZ) and the Municipality of Benghazi announced the launch of direct shipping lines connecting China to Libya. The MFZ welcomed the first Chinese container vessel carrying 1,000 containers, marking the start of a regular service with two trips scheduled each month using a modern fleet. The vessel’s inaugural route included a stop at Benghazi port, where 209 containers were unloaded and 250 were reloaded.

 

This development followed a visit by the Chinese Ambassador to Libya, Ma Xuiliang, to Benghazi on 4 May and Misrata on 7 May. The direct link between Guangzhou and Benghazi, operated by COSCO Shipping, reduces transit times from several months to just 25 days, with bi-weekly voyages planned. This shift coincides with China’s decision, effective 1 May, to exempt Libya and 52 other African countries from customs duties.

 

The inauguration of these routes signals Libya’s potential transition from an ‘end-of-line’ destination to a regional logistics hub. Analysts suggest that a strategic triangle involving Benghazi, Sirte and Misrata could manage international trade more efficiently, positioning Libya as a gateway for landlocked African countries such as Chad, Niger, Mali and Sudan. By acting as a transit point, Libyan ports could offer these countries closer geographical access and lower shipping costs through developing inland road networks.

 

On the political front, Khalifa Haftar received Ambassador Ma Xuiliang and called for a strategic partnership based on    trust, particularly in technology and renewable energy, while encouraging cooperation between public and private sectors. The Chinese Ambassador affirmed Beijing’s readiness to integrate Libya into the Belt and Road Initiative, viewing the new maritime lines as a cornerstone for enhanced trade and economic development.  - (ANA) -
