South African workers march in wage
strike
Pretoria, 10 Aug-(ANA)-Tens of thousands of South African public sector
workers have taken to the streets of Pretoria
as part of a nationwide one-day strike.
The
main union federation, Cosatu, has called on more than 1m public servants to
strike over a wage dispute.
By
law, essential workers such as doctors and police officers are not allowed to
strike, but many schools around the country are closed.
South Africa has been hit by waves of
industrial action in recent years.
During
the World Cup, hosted by South
Africa in June and July, transport and power
supply worker unions won pay rises after threatening to strike during the
tournament.
Government
spokesman Dumisani Nkwamba said steps had been taken to minimise the impact of
this strike. (ANA)
