Morocco GDP highest in Maghreb, UN study
Morocco tops the Maghreb for economic performance indicators, according to a UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) report published in Addis Ababa.
With GDP growth of 5.3% in 2009, Morocco surpassed Egypt (4.7%), Tunisia (3%), Mauritania (2.3%), Algeria (2.1%) and Libya (1.8%).
Noting that the regional GDP fell from 4.1% in 2008 to 3.5% in 2009, the "ERA 2010" study said that "prospects for long-term African growth, vigorous job creation and social development depend on the extent of economic diversification".
