UN welcomes efforts to restore calm in Guinea
New York, 21 Jan-(ANA)-UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has welcomed recent strides made towards restoring constitutional order in Guinea, gripped by unrest since Government forces opened fire on unarmed protesters at a rally last year.
Ban commended President Blaise Compaoré of Burkina Faso and others who
facilitated the signing of last week’s Ouagadougou agreement, which provides for
the establishment of a Government of national unity, led by a consensus Prime
Minister, and the holding of elections within six months.
Meanwhile, the Secretary-General has appealed for maximum restraint after
inter-religious violence in the central Nigerian city of Jos has reportedly left
over 200 people dead.
He called on all concerned to “seek peaceful solutions to religious and
other differences in the country.” (ANA)
