Lost boy survives in Park surrounded by lions

Maputo, 27 Aug-(ANA)-A boy has described  how he survived eight days alone in the Kruger National Park on the border between South Africa and Mozambique surrounded by lions and elephants and drinking from waterholes he shared with wild animals.

Police said that it was a million-to-one chance that the 12-year-old could come out of the bush alive after such an ordeal.

Alex Mboweni became separated from his family when they were spotted by border guards as they crossed from their native Mozambique into the Limpopo province of South Africa.

South Africa shares a 650km (400-mile) border with its eastern neighbour Mozambique, more than half of which is the massive Kruger National Park, which itself covers nearly 19,000sq km (7,300sq miles) and is a firm favourite with British tourists.

Alex was taken to hospital after his ordeal but has not shown any physical ill effects.

The boy and his mother had been crossing the border to South Africa where his father lives on a temporary visa. Samuel returned to his native country once a year to see his wife and only son but then decided to bring his family to live with him in Limpopo.

Grace, Alex and four other Mozambicans made the crossing but the group scattered when they were spotted by a police patrol.

Captain James Baloye, of the South African Police Service, said that the boy was still nervous about venturing out alone and was wary of the bush. He said that Alex was “very lucky” to have survived the ordeal. (ANA)
