UNFPA, Faith-Based Groups Find Partnership Critical to Maternal Health

New York, 07 Aug-(ANA)-Cooperation between faith-based groups and UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, is critical to reducing maternal deaths and ending violence against women worldwide, representatives of more than 40 international faith-based organizations have said.

The groups explored partnership potential during a two-day policy roundtable sponsored by UNFPA to discuss humanitarian relief, migration, maternal health and women's empowerment.

Thoraya Ahmed Obaid, UNFPA Executive Director, noted the “profound moral authority that religious leaders have.” Working with them is a UNFPA priority, she said, because “we were all aware of the fact that religious organizations are the oldest social service providers humankind has known.” (ANA)
