Zambian journalists to protest party harassment

Lusaka, 03 Aug-(ANA)-Zambian journalists are to march to the office of President Rupiah Banda to protest the harassment they face from members of his ruling party, media groups say.

The announcement came after three reporters accused members of the ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) of beating them while they tried to cover Banda's arrival at Lusaka's international airport on Wednesday.

The six media groups, including unions and press rights organisations, said they would march to the State House and seek a meeting with the president.

"We wish to urge the president to take further action other than just condemning the attacks on the media………”, said Henry Kabwe, president of the Media Institute of Southern Africa.

"We call upon the president to go further and call for the arrest of these culprits so that lessons can be drawn by other party cadres, and not just from the ruling party, that beating professionals in Zambia who play a key role of disseminating information will land them in trouble", he added.(ANA)
