Malawi HIV get free anti-retroviral drugs

Lilongwe, 30 June-(ANA)-About 250,000 out of one million Malawians who are HIV positive are reported to have access to free anti-retroviral (ARV) drugs.

The country's Secretary for Nutrition, HIV and AIDS, Mary Shawa, said the 77 percent of the people on the free drugs were leading normal lives.

Speaking at this year’s International Aids Candlelight Memorial on Sunday, Shawa also said that Malawi was a model nation as far as HIV/AIDS fight was concerned adding that people from neighbouring countries also come to the southern African nation to access free ARVs.

Malawi’s President Bingu Wa Mutharika, who attended the ceremony in which a minute silence was observed to remember those that died of the pandemic, said his government has intensified the war against AIDS.

Mutharika said the country has put out strategies in the fight against the pandemic and that also includes the provision of free ARVs.(ANA)
