Health experts to discuss child survival

Cape Town, 08 April  (ANA)  Leading global health experts,policy makers and parliamentarians will gather here from 17 to 10 April for the Countdown to 2015 for Maternal, Newborn & Child Survival conferenceand report launch.

The report will reveal the latest trends in life-savinginterventions critical to reduce mortality and reach the Millennium DevelopmentGoals on health.

The event takes place in advance of G8 Summit discussions onstrengthening health systems for maternal, newborn and child health to be heldin Japan in July.

Parliamentarians from the 68 countries, which account for 97per cent of global maternal and child mortality, as well as from donor nations,will participate in joint sessions to take stock of the latest researchfindings and debate strategies for increasing coverage levels.

Over 10 million women, newborns and children under the ageof five die each year from causes that are largely preventable and treatable.

The Countdown to 2015 conference will take placeduring the 118th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, which bringstogether over 1,000 delegates from around the world in Cape Town from 13 to18April.

The overlapping events will provide a valuable forum fordebate and action aimed at stimulating investment in maternal, newborn andchild health, according to meeting organisers. (ANA)
