Tanzania to provide Internet services to Burundi

DAR ES SALAAM 23 Oct (ANA) - The Tanzania Telecommunications Corporation (TTCL) on Tuesday signed an agreement with the Burundi Backbone Systems (BBS) aimed at providing broadband Internet services to the tiny east African nation.

The 6 million U.S. dollars deal will be implemented in Burundi for the next 10 years, said TTCL CEO Waziri Kindamba shortly after he signed the agreement with BBS CEO Elie Ntihagowumwe in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam.

Kindamba assured Burundi of first class broadband Internet services, adding that the deal enabled TTCL to broaden its business portfolio in the east African region and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region with a population of 344 million.

"TTCL will provide first class broadband Internet services in Burundi through our stations in Kabanga and Manyovu in the border region of Kigoma," said Kindamba.

He said following the signing of the agreement Burundi will now be connected across the world.

Kindamba said the new Internet services will ease and improve business between traders in the two neighboring countries that are also member states of the East African Community (EAC). Other EAC member states are Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and South Sudan.

The state-run TTCL has more than 2 million clients in Tanzania.(ANA)
