Significant UN Vote on link between hunger and conflict
The United Nations, 24 May. - (ANA) - The UN Security Council, the United Nations body responsible for maintaining international peace and security, is expected to adopt a resolution today that for the first time establishes hunger as an essential obstacle to global security.
The UN World Food Programme (WFP) applauds the pending passage of this resolution, which would give significant momentum to efforts to eradicate global hunger, which is increasingly linked to conflict.
The “conflict and hunger resolution,” as it is informally called, would give food security issues greater attention in Security Council deliberations, boosting efforts to reach the Zero Hunger target of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
The resolution is expected to come to vote in New York at 10:00 a.m. EDT on Thursday, 24 May. It is sponsored by Côte d’Ivoire, Kuwait, the Netherlands and Sweden. - (ANA) -
