Mediterranean: security balance is fragile

BRUSSELS, 11 April. - (ANA) - The EU-funded Euromesco ‘Euro-Mediterranean Study Commission’ (EuroMeSCo), the main network of research centres on politics and security in the Mediterranean, is to hold its annual general assembly in Brussels on 13-15 April 2016. There is heightened interest in this meeting, in that it is taking place in a context of intense reflection on the future of a region disturbed by conflict, terrorism, the challenges of economic development and the European contribution to their solution.

The agenda reflects these concerns. The plenary session will be centred on the theme of the "fragile balance in the Mediterranean, with tense relations between some states" and the collapse of others, but also with the increasing threat arising from politicized sectarianism and terrorist groups. "This situation carries serious risks for stability in the Euro-Mediterranean space and beyond,” Euromesco said.

The General Assembly will look into the current security architecture in the Mediterranean and examine how to improve the situation. - (ANA) -
